[b][b]LaQuaill Baker (L.B) Written by C. Jordan For LaQuaill Baker, music was an undeniable calling. Growing up with gospel roots in Columbus, Ohio L.B started playing the piano at age five. Before the age of ten he was playing both the piano and drums, and was a favored soloist in the church. It was apparent to L.B’s family that he possessed a natural gift for music. As L.B grew, so did his musical inclination and it wasn’t long before the young musician was arranging and producing, in addition to singing and playing instruments. L.B’s strong yet smooth vocals and ability to create magic with the ivory keys belied his young age. His alto was reminiscent of a young Teddy Pendergrass with the silken texture of Marvin Gay. L.B’s peers began asking to him to consult with them on music projects. It was a natural progression for L.B to begin writing music. For him it was simply a matter of translating emotion to words and then to his first language…music. By the time he left grammar school, L.B was a lead signer both school and church. He sang every chance he got, winning open mic events and talent shows allover Columbus. L.B’s vocals soon caught the attention of a gentleman by the name of Chris Powell and he asked L.B to join the infamous STARS program there in Columbus. Being a part of STARS allowed L.B the opportunity to hone his craft even more and soon he was lending his musical talents to others; writing, producing and arranging for other artists. L.B’s time with the S.T.A.R.S Program lead to an even bigger opportunity. He met a musical kindred spirit in Charles Manning and joined the Soul/R&B group 1988. As a part of 1988, L.B had the opportunity to tour with the Rick James Stone City band and Slave. Unfortunately 1988 was merely a stepping stone as was the brief opportunity to sing with another group aptly titled, M.U.S.S.I.C. (Mature, Urban, Style, Swagger, Intelligence & Class) Still, the experience sharpened L.B’s music palate and broadened his horizons and he emerged a cultured musician. Today L.B is only twenty-three years old, but in musical maturity he is well beyond his years. Poised to finally begin his solo career he released the single, When We Were Friends. True to form, L.B’s solid vocals have won listeners over everywhere he has performed. L.B is poised to take the summer of 2011 by storm with his hot new single and upcoming album. Although he is excited to be hearing his single on radio, L.B’s even more excited to be performing and translating music, his longtime love.
