Bio
My recent activities are primarily working as a composer and a graduate student at University of Chicago in music department. I am currently working on an orchestral piece Intermezzo: SHANG, commissioned from National Symphonic Orchestra (Taiwan). One movement of the piece was previously read by Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra in January 2011. Previous orchestral work, Awakening (2003), and Like a Dream, An Illusion (2008) were premiered by Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and Yale University Philharmonic Orchestra, respectively. In 2009 summer, Awakening was toured in Beijin, Shanghai, and Taipei by “Cross-strait peace orchestra” formed by members of major orchestras from both Taiwan and China. For more information on my composition, please go http://yuanchenli.wordpress.com/ My arrangement history was first staged in high school experimenting with mixed ensemble on Disney themes (1993-5). A chamber orchestra version of the selection of Les Miserable and some hits from the films were produced in order to accompany with school female chorus (1995-8). Later in 2006, series of folksongs in Hakka were arranged for Chinese orchestra, commissioned by National Chinese Orchestra (Taiwan). Latest arrangement is again for series of Taiwanese folksong modeling Berio’s folksong cycle and instrumentations, commissioned by Moment Philharmonic Orchestra (Taiwan, 2010). Some clips and music of free tonality of my work (clip number 4 and after) could be found at this page. http://www.showcaseyourmusic.com/yuanchenliarrangement My goal of arrangement is to envision a task for the work from the assigned instrumentation, style, and the type of collaboration in order to produce the new means of context and collaborative quality. yuanchen.li [at] yahoo.com
