Josh began songwriting as early as 1998 but began performing his songs some ten years later after several stints playing in rock bands as a guitarist. Even today he plays in folk line-ups such as Gretel and the Teramachi and The Potbelly Strings. Josh's songs are about everyday subjects such as the everyday people he meets and everyday emotions that come from observing society and people close to him. These people could be recovering alcoholics, people in denial of something blatant, children who are brought up by something that is not their parents, or otherwise ordinary and faceless people walking through the streets of Melbourne or Josh's native Hobart. Having launched his debut EP in 2009, Josh has since sold about a hundred copies after a busy time busking and playing at venues in both Hobart and Melbourne. Highlights of his brief songwriting sojourn include playing at The Great Britain Hotel, Hardiman's Cafe, Beav's Bar and The Clifton Hill in Melbourne, The Republic Bar in North Hobart. Playing at the Cygnet Folk Festival in 2010 convinced him to apply for a spot in the event in his own right.
