Barely Breathing is a metal core band that is fast becoming a sensation on the South African music scene. This up and coming band has huge plans for the future and seems destined for bigger and better things. The band was formed in February 2006. The band members Vocalist: Michael Cronje Guitarists: Shaun Pearson and Schalk Basson, Bassist Shawn Greyling & Eben Pepler Drummer. Experience They started recording of demo CD June 2006 with Joe Foster Studios – 1000 copies distributed. They won the battle of the Bands Florida High School August 2006. They performed live at Roxy’s, Gecko’s, Maloney’s, Steamers, Kahoonies, Grim fest (Tempos), Back 2 Basics, Splashy Fen Rock Festival, London Calling, Zeppelin’s, The Bunker, Dragon Lounge, Dakota Rocks charity festival, Bell’s Sundowner and Summoning of Grimm Fest, Red Door, Burn, Emerging sounds battle of the bands, Battle for Woodstock, Metal Harvest Festival Tempos, Absinthe Festival. They recorded their mini album with Gunston studios and Casket signed them and is distributing it in the UK and Europe. The mini CD was launched in South Africa on the 23 February 2008. They will be recording at Philia studios from the 23 June 2008 to the 7 July 2008 their full 14 track album. This will be launched and distributed in October 2008. The band just completed a short tour to KZN with Chromium and played at Red Door and Burn Nightclub. Barely Breathing writes all its own music. It usually is a collaborative effort although some individual gems do exist. Vocalist Michael Cronje writes all the lyrics. The band has been fortunate to play with big names such as Chromium, Chokehold, Mute, Warthane, Agro and LA Cobra, Underbelly, Urban Vitamin and many more. Recipe for success The band members agree that there are a few key ingredients without which they would not have been able to achieve the success they have so far enjoyed, and the success that they are striving for in future. "The first crucial ingredient is the fact that we pour our hearts and our souls into our music. For us it is not about anything other than the music, the rest will follow. "In addition, the support of our families and friends is crucial. Financial and emotional support is always there when needed, and advice from very talented people like Martin Schofield (Wonderboom), Agro band members and Jared of Chromium are invaluable. "And we see our fans not as fans, but as friends." This is the key, they believe. What about the future? It is quite obvious that this band is determined to make it, and to make it big. The next short-term goals of this band include the shooting of a music video, the recording of an album, and as many live performances over the length and width of South Africa as possible. "This is why bands exist: To play live."We believe though that the South African music scene is not ready for metal yet, and that – much as we love our own country – our long term future may lay in either England or the USA."
