Whalan (The Aposoul)—age 19—DJ/beats and MC/rapper Sam Eckstein—age 20- electric lead guitar --- Steve Reyes- live drums Teruko Kushi- live art- 18 Kayla Yoder- dance- 19 Erin Potter- performance art We combine original hip-hop, electronic/dub-step, psychedelic rock, jam, funk, as well as spoken word that provides conscious social commentary on the current state of our existence. Our live performance has the high energy of a hip-hop or electronic set with a unique instrumental element. The music we make aims to tap into the essence of our experiences as living and conscious beings. “Life is a train of moods like a string of beads; and as we pass through them they prove to be many colored lenses, which paint the world their own hue, and each shows us only what lies in its own focus.”-Ralph Waldo Emerson. We are bringing together people in New York City and beyond to engage in unique live performance. With notice we can draw a crowd of at least one hundred people in the NYC/Brooklyn area. The music we make is influenced by simply everything that we can think of and feel. The following are some of the musicians who inspire us the most to take our own path and sonic journey: A Tribe Called Quest, Big Gigantic, KRS ONE, The Mars Volta, John Frusciante Lauryn Hill, Bassnectar, Immortal Technique, The Roots, Matisyahu, Greatful Dead… many many more… Jackson T. Whalan (The Aposoul) and Sam Eckstein became friends at The New School in New York City in 2009. Both had been writing, producing, performing and recording their own music prior to this convergence. Jackson was independently creating conscious hip-hop for peace (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BZYwvzqBsY), and Sam was involved with his original rock music . The two began playing together in the summer of 2010 when they moved into an apartment in Brooklyn, drawn by each other’s vision. Shorty after they named the collaboration Technicolor Lenses, inspired at first by a Ralph Waldo Emerson quote on consciousness and perception. They started playing shows immediately, beginning with main stage at the Big Up Music Festival in Ghent, NY on August 6th, 2010. They performed at Bella Terra on Sept. 20th, 2010, headlined by Immortal Technique and Lee "Scratch" Perry. Since then they have played many more shows in the New York area, opening for Black Sheep on September 14th, 2010 at club Europa, then opening for the legendary Marley Marl at City Winery on Sept. 20th, 2010 at a peace benefit, with other pivotal and self-produced gigs in between.
