Bio
Despite the fact that the Pickins take a militant stance against all things patchouli, dolphin, crystal or hairily so related, this bunch of delightful gentlemen are by far the biggest bunch of hippies one could ever meet. Honour. Fire. Integrity. But don't be fooled, as while the Decent Chappism coarses through their veins, rock'n'roll burns fierce in their hearts, a fire that has been fed on a fuel that is as varied as the gentlemen themselves - from 60's Chicargo Blues and The Rolling Stones, The Who and Small Faces, BRMC, The Black Crowes and You Am I. The Pickins truly are a rock'n'roll machine - strong classic rock backbone, hard driving stoner riffs, shredding blues inspired solos, moments of psychedelic bliss, all mingled with a slightly drunken country swagger and smattered throughout a wall of raw and raucous guitars. This fine ensmeble of gents have been tearing up the glamour filled vomit pits and bars of their rock'n'roll hometown Perth for 18 monthes now, as well as embarking upon a couple of filled to the gills, rollickingly gentlemanlike good-time tours of this sun ravaged state of ours (WA), without a tan in sight. Up untill the end of 2006, the Pickins were only able to offer their fans scorching live sets and a damn fine, raw and raucous single, but then, at the beginning of 2007, they met with the most remarkable and truly a gent amongst gents, Mr Dave Parkin, and were welcomed into his most humble of abodes, Blackbird Studios. Throughout the rigourous two weeks of daily carpark cricket tests, morning, and arvo beers, not to mention carnival sideshow distractions and bikini parades, the gents came out the other end incredibly fit (cricket can be hard work without many in the slips), not to mention being filled with a heightened sense of spiritual and musical enlightenment and a cracking, well structured, beautifully performed, exquisitley produced, self titled debut album, which was launched in March (2007) to a sold out Amplifier Bar (one of Perth's premier, live music glamour filled vomit pits which we love). Despite the fact the Pickins may well be tongue firmly placed in cheek, with a penchant for raising a spot of hell, and with a misplaced sense of moderation, they are truly serious about their rock'n'roll, the family, honour above all, and working hard to keep the rock'n'roll machine well and truly lubed and humming at it's prime. With a brutally honest album tucked under their belt, wearing their heart emblazened upon their sleeve, there's more to the decent chaps of the Pickins than meets the eye.
