Bio
Kangsu Lee's first theatre motion picture viewing experience was "Ben-Hur." He was quite a young boy and did not understand much of it, but it was all quite an experience, especially the score. Lee has been hooked on film music ever since. Mr. Lee was raised in Seoul, Korea, where he participated in the production of gospel and pop music as a composer, arranger, and performer (piano and keyboard). In his native country he participated in composing, arranging, performing, and mastering in Western and Korean pop, dance, and gospel productions for years, and now for the past dozen years in New York he has been pitching his music, especially orchestral music (from pop to classical, to jazz) for TV/Film use. He is pretty comfortable writing and producing in quite a variety of musical genres. During his early adulthood he was especially captivated by works like Chopin's Études, Beethoven's piano sonatas, Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. The pure joy he experienced listening, playing, analyzing, and transcribing made him lose track of time. After coming to the United States to pursue further study of music composition, Lee earned an undergraduate degree at the State University of New York at Purchase, with a major in studio composition. He then went on to earn a masters degree in music technology (film scoring) from New York University. In 2002 he participated in an ASCAP film-scoring workshop, held in memory of Buddy Baker. Currently working on compositions in a minimalist way, Lee is focusing on the core essentials of the music, shorn of fringe and fluff. Thus, we have here a highly eclectic composer who skillfully blends different styles of music thereby building his own style.
