Matt Peel born in Withington Hospital in ’82, learnt the electric guitar during his years spent at Sheffield university, gaining a science degree in Sport Sociology, Matt grew to love expressing musical passion due to hard-hitting groups. These consisted of The Smiths, The Doors, Stone Roses, The Clash, The Rolling Stones, The Manic Street Preachers, Radiohead and of course Oasis. Each of these inspired him to create music and eventually lead him to the clutches of the hard-drinking, hard-rocking and hard-lovin Real Lies. Equipped with a fiery personality and a lust for life, falling in to the rhythm of an unconventional rock n’ roll band has never need a volume advertisement. Ready to storm the Manchester music scene, Simon Hughes, skilled guitarist, vocalist and song writer is confident that Real Lies will be the next face of Manchester music. Since picking up the guitar at the ripe age of 7, Stockport born Simon took to the Manchester lifestyle like a fish to water. Being a lover of The Beatles, Oasis and Jet, the band has layered these sounds in to their own band’s Brighton Rock era styled music. Bass guitarist Neil Podmore born in Longsight Manchester, first picked up a guitar at the age of 12 and grew up influenced by David Bowie and Led Zepplin to name but a few. These influences are evident in the approach of Real Lies’s music. Neil spent a lot of time following the band Crispy Ambulance then called Ram Ram Kino, which provides inspiration for much of the Real Lies style. Being the most experienced member of the band, naturally leads to Neil providing the focus for the band and giving the other members direction. Drummer Paul McGuffog from Bury is the newest member of Real Lies, and has hit the ground running. Paul started drumming aged 10 and hasn’t looked back since. His hard hitting, bass drum thumping, extravagant fill in style drives this band onto being one of the best unsigned acts in Manchester. Influences include Queen, Muse, Razorlight, Paul looks to drumming legends such as Mike Cosgrove, Roger Taylor and Steve Jocz, John Bonham and Neil Peart for inspiration. Real Lies were formed in the summer of 2005 (with Paul joining in July 06) and quickly developed their own fan base, loud and proud guitar-driven, original rock music has filled a gap in the somewhat indie-drenched Manchester scene. Gigging on the Manchester circuit and using myspace (www.myspace.com/reallies2) to get their music out to a wider audience, has meant they have already achieved status and a strong following, which is evident at gigs when the crowds are singing along to their own original songs. The band is hard working and focussed on staying true to their own distinct style of music, without succumbing to commercial influences which dilute the style of many young bands. The judges tip them to make the big time and commented that they are they catchiest rock band they have ever heard. There are 3 Heats in total with 3 bands from each heat competing in the August bank holiday final. Real Lies are firm favourites at The Venue and Monday was no different, as the sun shone through the windows and only the first few pints of the day had been pulled, Real Lies had the difficult task of playing one of the first slots of the day and still managed to get the crowd rockin. The competition went on well into the evening, as band after band tried to make it through to the next round. In an obvious conclusion Real Lies were declared worthy winners; they performed as always, a tight, original set and are every inch the professionals. The sun had long since gone down and many many pints had been pulled, the crowd were tired and the bands even more so, but winners of the competition Real Lies dug deep into their reserves and soon stirred the crowd back up and ended the day on a high, playing a final set of a few favourites including Which Way to the Bar, Memories and Jet’s Are You Gonna Be My Girl. The date of the final is Monday 27th August, visit [link="URL"]www.myspace.com/reallies2[/link] for more information.
