Everybody in this world has someone that he/she resembles in one way or the other. Some resemble in their physical look, some in the voice while others in their actions and behaviors and it goes on and on. Whichever the case is, each of the two parties involve no matter how close, shall have their own uniqueness. This is the situation with Nancy Nanz- "the reigning R&B princess of the Smiling Cost, The Gambia". (As she was described by one of allgambian newspaper's editors in an article published about her in their entertainment column.) She is often termed as the "Beyonce of The Gambia" in comparism to the famous American singer Beyonce of Destiny's child. "Hate her or like her, Nancy Nanz has the potential to be a big R&B star one day". The editor added. Mammy Nancy Waggeh A.K.A Nancy Nanz was born to 2 renowned Gambians (Ebou Waggeh- a veteran Gambian Journalist who used to work for the Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS) and Ida Sosseh. Nancy who was born in Tobacco Road in Banjul-the capital city of the Gambia on October 2nd 1986 started to take music as her career in 2004 when she was first supported to produce her first single ‘BABY BOY' and introduced on stage for the first time by her manager and promoter DJ 2RAYS (Lil Sisqo) . She has not get into anything new as she is following the footsteps of her granny who was a highly admired musician in Banjul.Her great grand mother on her mum's side was a great artist of her time who was into acting and singing on cultural issues. She always sang for the "Fanal" (Lanterns) during Christmas, New Year and other cultural festivals. Nancy is believed to have inherited her great grand mother's musical talents. She has always been a lover of music when she was young and going to school. She attended Ndow's primary, Junior and Senior Secondary schools in the Gambia and graduated in 2004.During her junior school days, the teenage musician used to be inspired by stars like Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez and many other American idols. Beyonce Knowles of Old Destiny's Child was her favorite of all. She likes her so much so that she endeavours to act like her at times in dressing, dancing and even tries to sing like her. Anytime there was a school show, she was always on stage either miming or dancing the American star's hit songs. Her peers at school finally gave her the name "Beyonce of The Gambia" Which started to take precedence over her real name all of a sudden. Her beauty, captivating voice, stunning mode of dress and mesmerizing attitude earned her the privilege to be selected as the most beautiful girl during the Easter Carnival and Miss Princess Gambia Shows organised by the 2-Rays Syndicate at the beach side. She was given the opportunity to do an accapella for the crowd with her own song. Nancy's single "BABY BOY" which is a wollof version of Beyonce's Baby Boy combination with Sean Paul surprisingly raised her solders.She remixed this song in Wollof to better suit the Gambian audience featuring DJ LIL SISQO AKA (2-Rayz). From there, she was taken by the C.E.O of 2-Rays Syndicate to do her first studio recording and the song was played in Radio Stations all over The Gambia. Her first live performance was at a Carnival organised by the Lend A Hand Society where she was introduced by her producer and manage. This is the day that her manager calls "breaking the chains". Nancy then became a public icon and gain admirations even from her worst enemies. She then recorded other killing songs like "JIGAIN YII", "N.A.N.C.Y MUSIC" and "PARTY OVER HERE" and in no time, she became a star in Gambia's music industry and starts to appear and feature in a lot of national events, shows, concerts and from then on, it was no turning back for her. Nancy, whose songs are often played on most of the radios and her videos aired on TV, has already established a strong fan base for herself as the leading Gambian female R&B singer.. The N.A.N.C.Y song is about herself and her future. In this song, She tried to let her fans know that although she has been inspired by Beyonce, her music and style is her own. It is recognise as one of the top hit songs in the Gambia. Even the children can sing along the spelling of her name. The video is classic and the western style of performance is highly appreciated by the viewers. Nancy Nanz "Follow Me TO Africa" song featuring the Senegalese Rap star FATA was selected by the sound city production for a compilation used to sensitize The Gambian population during the Banjul AU Summit in July 2006. She again did another sensitization song with the most talked about Senegalese artist "Pacotille" for The Gambia Electoral Commission during the 2006 Presidential election. Both singles are hot and helped to expose her a lot especially in Senegal. This election song is her most recent work which is part of a 12 track CD featuring different renowned Gambian Artist sponsored by the Independent Electoral Commission of the Gambia during the past Presidential Election. Nancy in this tract sings about FREE AND FAIR ELECTION in wollof. "I like to sing in both English and wollof that way I cater for both my local as well as my international fans." Nancy, who has a very quite personality is completely different while on stage. She is indeed an extremely good performer and as a result unintentionally attracts a lot of her fans on the stage. She is very dedicated towards her career and she is working hard towards achieving greater success. "I know that I have entered into a very challenging field which requires patients, dedication, seriousness and quality work in order to survive." She said. With a beauty that appeals and a type of music that is globally recognized, one would easily say that there is a good recipe for her to succeed in the music scene. Nancy, with only two years in the music has undoubtedly succeeded in injecting a healthy dose of optimism in The Gambian R&B scene. She is presently working with her producer in releasing her most awaited album. You have never seen a Gambian in this hype before. She is coming to take over the airwaves and get her lyrics stick to the minds of the people. She is going to take the Gambian Map on the Hollywood top ten.
