Shooting Shiloh is a Rock/Pop band from Charleston, SC. The band originally started with the lead singer, Jerry Jacobs, and the lead guitarist, Alex Moore. Alex and Jerry have been friends since early childhood and grew up playing on soccer teams together and going to the same school since 2nd grade. When Alex first started playing guitar he would invite Jerry over to sing with him. This is how the band first started. Two kids with big dreams getting together on Sundays to play and sing. Together, Alex and Jerry played in front of family and friends any chance they got. When the 7th grade talent show came, they knew it was their chance to shine. They played the song “Hold My Hand” by Hootie and the Blowfish and with amazing support from family and friends, they put on a great show. From this point their music group was simply known as “Jerry and Alex” (for reasons unknown). They continued playing together, never interested in anything more than having fun and maybe impressing a few girls here and there. But as they matured, so did their music. By the end of the school year, they had already written 3 songs together, and had preformed them in classrooms and hallways around the school. When the 8th grade came, they were ready to take their music to the next level. In the talent show that year they performed an original song called “Its All You.” Once again, with great family and friend support they performed very well. They also made an appearance at one of the school dances. As high school drew nearer and nearer, they once again decided to take another step in musical progress. They recorded a song in a family member’s studio and distributed it to friends and family. With increasing positive feedback, their own studio ambitions came about. They began to purchase their own studio equipment and started recording songs themselves. By the time 9th grade arrived, they had already written around 5 songs, and were ready to show their new high school what they had to offer to it’s struggling music community. As the year progressed, their songwriting did also. After playing at various parties and family functions together, they started to write more songs. They would write about whatever was going on in their lives, or simply whatever they felt at the time. All of their original songs have stories behind them. By the end of their freshman year in high school, they had written 10 songs and were ready to record. They spent the next summer recording and writing and performing whenever possible. It was not a rare sight to see “Jerry and Alex” playing in front of people at beach houses or living rooms alike. During this summer, they decided they needed a real band name. So they assumed the name “Marinara,” due to a stunning lack of creativity. They continued playing under this name for the rest of the summer. Both musicians became more involved in their churches. Both of them started playing in their church bands and these experiences had a great affect on them both musically and spiritually. Their music began to improve as they moved into the 10th grade. They dived headfirst into songwriting and began to incorporate deeper meanings and emotions into their music. Their increased involvement in Church gave them a new edge in the music community of their school. They were no longer only offering entertainment and fun, but now they were trying to relay a message in their music. Their songs talked about the struggles and trials that every teen experiences, and how life goes on even through these things. They began to try and show people the love and forgiveness that can be obtained through a relationship with Jesus Christ. The previous year they had met a friend (Kris Steele) through their soccer team that they recruited to play drums in their band. After the addition of Kris, they decided a changing of band names was in order. While at Kris’s house, the three musicians saw the neighbor’s dog, Shiloh, lying in the grass. Jerry said, “Hey, Shiloh looks like he’s dead or something.” At that Kris said, “Hey who shot Shiloh?” With much laughter the band name “Shooting Shiloh” came to be our new title. Under this name, the trio played in the talent show. Despite temporary microphone failure, the band continued to play, and were received quite well by a relatively tough crowd. Met with smiles and praise in the hallways the next week, the band decided to remain playing together. That year their songwriting really took off. By the end of the year around 20 original songs had been written in total. With monumental upgrades to the home studio, their recording skill level began to increase. They decided to work on their first self-produced album that year. After many draft copies had been released, the new songs just kept pouring in. After realizing the dramatic increase in original music, the band decided to hold off on fully putting out an album until they were absolutely sure what the best songs were, and until family members were willing to pay for the blank CDs that we needed to copy with our computers. Picking these songs from a list of over 25 was not easy. So the band once again decided to hold off on the album. The band were offered a chance to play at a yearbook signing party for the entire school, so they re-focused on practicing and perfecting their live performance. At the yearbook party, they were once again well received and had the time of their lives playing in front of so many people. After this show, they decided to try to play more like it. But as summer came they once again switched their focus to recording. Currently, the band is still recording while looking for more shows to start playing at. As their junior/senior year and high school arrives, they are looking forward to the musical opportunity that this next school year will present to them. With increasing support, and more spiritual inspiration, Shooting Shiloh is determined to make the best of this year. Thanks for listening!
