The Beauty in this Bitch "I want to tell the story of life," Serrano says, pronounced 'Sir-on-oh', "I was born to sing." She has spent much of her 20 years struggling with what people think of her talents. But because of some wonderful friends, Sarah McRoberts, Megan Land, and Jen Orgas, Serrano has discovered her musical side again. "I now know that this is what I want to do." Born in Maryland Heights, Mo., Serrano has broke the traditional Midwestern 'fear of the unknown' mentality, and traveled to many places including most countries in Europe and Central America. "Traveling keeps life interesting," Serrano says. "And how could I write about life, if I don't experience it." The creative forces always engulfed Serrano's life, though it was more of a secretive release. "As a teenager, I was always looking for a creative release, be it singing, poetry, acting or dancing, however, I kept it all a secret, showing only my closest friends my talents," Serrano says. "I don't even think my parents really know my talent. Music has always been in my soul, I've just been afraid to share it." In 2004, Serrano finally thought that it was her time to shine and she decided to audition for American Idol. When it came time for Serrano to prove why she belonged on the country's most popular show, she poured out her soul to the producers. While they thought she was very good, they said she just wasn't what they were looking for. "That experience was just emotionally, mentally and physically draining," Serrano says. Being rejected caused Serrano to hide the fact that she sang once more, for fear that other people wouldn't appreciate her talent either. She dabbled in a few high school plays, gaining local fame, but it was short lived. Upon graduating high school in 2005, Serrano decided that singing would no longer be apart of her life. "I hit the mute button on my voice because I felt that singing hadn't gotten me anywhere before, there was no way it would in college, Serrano says. " Serrano took a few theater classes at the University of Kansas, in hopes of possibly gaining the confidence to perform again one day and to keep her creative side satisfied. She participated in a couple plays, working backstage. In October 2006, after being musically dormant for over a year and a half, Serrano met Jon Matteson, Michael Ford, and Tosin Morohunfola, who told her to audition for the University's spring production of 'Guys and Dolls', ensuring her that her talents would exceed many of the other girls auditioning. After intensive reflection during a winter trip to Paris, Serrano decided she would try her luck with the musical. Serrano gave it her all on the January 2007 audition and made it through three of the four callbacks. But in the end, she was not cast. At that point, Serrano fell into a deep depression, deciding to call it quits again. "I told myself that singing was just not for me, which was a difficult thing for my mind to wrap around." In March 2007, Serrano met and teamed up with spa3, Rick Luv and NuSol, of Crux, a Lawrence, Kan. based hip-hop group, to begin production on her first demo. "Our relationship grows more and more each day," Serrano says. "We really work well together, and creatively we have achieved some things that I never thought would be possible for me." Also, with her background in fund raising for cancer organizations, and Crux's annual cancer benefit concerts, this collaboration seems perfect. Serrano's demo, when complete, will be comprised of the songs, 'Vixen', featuring spa3, and 'More than Friends', a duet with NuSol, as well as, a cover song that has yet to be determined. "I have a good feeling about our work," Serrano says. "My life has forever been changed with this experience and I am grateful for the opportunity to be working with such talented individuals."
