Hammerhead are a Hobart (Tasmania) based four piece melodic rock band that formed in 2004. All members loving hard, melodic, guitar oriented music were frustrated with the absence of such original bands in the state, so set out to fill the void themselves. With a convincing, honest and ‘in your face’ stage presence combined with the awesome fretboard gymnastics of Adrian Scott (AKA the Shred Master General), it wasn’t long before the band attracted a following, predominantly made up of lovers of 80s and 90s rock and metal. Hammerhead’s music has occasionally been criticised as being “done before in previous decades”. The band’s response to such comments is simply, "We're flattered". Hammerhead will argue that they definitely have their own sound, but yes, are heavily inspired by an era of music that was full of passion, theatrics and musical brilliance. In 2006 Hammerhead released their debut album, “Stiff”. This was a twelve track album packed full of guitar goodies, chunky riffs and soaring vocals. It was well received, at least on a local level and had a track selected, “Dance of the Mail Order Bride” to appear on Tasmania’s “Amplified” CD. Stiff received some great reviews including comments such as it being the best rock album to come out of the state in a decade. Unfortunately due to an uncanny string of traumatic personal experiences by all band members and eventually the need to replace the original drummer, Nathan Adams, the show never set foot outside Tasmania. In 2008, Hammerhead’s second album, “Seduction Suite”, was recorded with new drummer, Paul Hiscutt. Hiscutt’s drumming style was remarkably different to that of Adams’ (i.e. more rock and less metal) and impacted significantly on the feel of the album. This was generally found to be a positive for the band at this stage due to the songs of Seduction Suite being more rock and less metal than Stiff, regardless of the drumming. The fifteen track “Seduction Suite” is a monster album of good time rock and roll tunes and again features the incredible guitars of the Shred Master General as well as the trademark soaring vocal harmonies of Reeve and Smith. As well as presently doing launch gigs for Seduction Suite, Hammerhead are writing tracks for album number three. Original members Reeve, Smith and Scott intend for Hammerhead to be around for quite a while yet and to build a healthy discography. The relationship between these three writers is solid so Hammerhead fans can expect a lot more good time ballsy rock and metal to come.
