Somong (SO); Hope in Music How do you define HOT? Apparently, South Florida's climate isn't the only thing scorching the airwaves.. The south in general has been producing heat musically for the past few years, and yet to look back. With cities such as Atlanta and New Orleans providing the spark for this musical revolution, a little further south on the map Miami and Palm Beach County are adding a little more fuel to the already untamed fire of Southern Hip Hip & R&B. Ready to add a little fuel of his own is Producer, Singer, Songwriter, and Dancer Somong simply known as SO. Somong, a nick name given to him by his mother at an early age means HOPE. Obviously more than just a stage name, Somong decided to name himself SO....A great way of keeping it simple and real...No gimmick. The 22 year old phenom was born in South Korea to a Korean mother and African American military father. His family moved to the U.S. before So learned how to walk so he was raised in the American culture and always surrounded by music. His father was a well respected musician in the Navy, so music has been mixed in SO's bloodline for quite sometime. With that in mind, SO has definitely served his Sabbaths in church, performing in the choir while also fine tuning his musical craft at home. SO naturally taught himself how to play the piano, and many other instruments that his father had around the house. Although raised in a positive household, life hasn't always been easy for the rising star. SO has definitely stumbled across racial discrimination throughout his life and young music career. However, SO uses the ignorance as motivation to be the best talent in the industry and to kill all racial divides through universal music that all will come to love.. Living in a predominantly black culture all his life has given him strength, inspiration, and made him the incredible talent that he is today. Trapped within the confines of a perplexed life, SO has managed to escape by utilizing music as his scapegoat, in which he simply states,"Music saved me from a lot of suffering and confusion...sort of my underground railroad." Moving vividly, Hip Hop/R&B fans can expect a new breed of entertainer. A new movement has begun guided by SO's ability to create a unique style of music and at the same time, meet the demands of most Hip Hop aficionados. With his very out going personality, confidence, and vision SO is ready to take the industry by storm and give the world something to look forward to. Compare him to Usher, John Legend, Chris Brown, R. Kelly, Akon, even a male version of Alicia Keys but make no mistake about it, SO will make a name for himself and stand side by side will all the biggest names in the world. Somong means HOPE. SO allows HOPE to be a promise, not just an expectation. Christopher D.
